Intergenerational Fun, Connection and Wellbeing at Charlton Kings Care Home

Today we were delighted to welcome college students into the home for a lively intergenerational activity with our residents. The afternoon was filled with laughter, encouragement and friendly competition as everyone took part in a fun game of target practice using Nerf guns.

Our residents thoroughly enjoyed the experience, cheering each other on and sharing plenty of smiles with the students. Activities like this create a relaxed, inclusive environment where residents feel comfortable joining in at their own pace.

Intergenerational activities offer many benefits for older people. Spending time with younger generations can lift mood, reduce feelings of loneliness and bring a fresh sense of energy into the home. The positive interaction and conversation helps support emotional wellbeing and strengthens residents’ connection to the wider community.

The target practice game also supported hand–eye coordination, concentration and gentle upper-body movement, helping residents stay active in a fun and low-pressure way. Learning a new game and taking part in friendly competition provided mental stimulation, helping to keep minds engaged while boosting confidence and a sense of achievement.

Just as importantly, these sessions help residents feel valued and included. Sharing time, stories and laughter with younger people reinforces a sense of purpose and belonging. For the students, the visit offered an opportunity to build empathy, understanding and respect for older people, making the experience meaningful for everyone involved.

We are incredibly grateful to the students for spending time with us and helping to create such a positive and enjoyable afternoon.
